Southampton Solent University is to host its second annual music journalism conference, Word Up!, on Monday 3rd November, at the Solent Lecture Theatre in the SM building at 12-4pm.
After last year’s hugely successful inaugural conference, this year’s event brings together another heavyweight line-up of writers and editors from top magazines and newspapers including The Guardian, Metal Hammer, Clash, The Line of Best Fit and Popjustice. Word Up! will once again offer students crucial insight into the industry and a chance to meet and network with experts at the top of their respective fields.
Sarah Hall, Senior Publicist at Sony Music, will be reflecting on a career promoting mega-selling artists, from Daft Punk to Pink, with Jacqui Swift (SSU, The Sun).
The Guardian’s Head Music Critic Alexis Petridis, Metal Hammer’s Editor-At-Large Dom Lawson and The Line of Best Fit’s Lauren Down will be among the experts pondering the role of the music critic in ‘Critical Condition: Why Music Criticism Matters’, in a panel discussion hosted by Fiona Sturges (SSU, The Independent).
Also planned is A Day In The Life Of… Alexis Petridis, in which The Guardian’s music critic will look back on his career and offer his top tips for success, and ‘Smash Hits: Adventures in Online Journalism, a discussion on the pleasures and perils of working on digital publishing with Lauren Down, Dom Lawson and Clash Magazine’s Mike Diver. The talk will be hosted by Michael Cragg, Features Editor at Popjustice.
Fiona Sturges, PMJ lecturer and co-organiser of the event, said: “This year’s speakers are some of the best-known and most skilled music journalists working right now. If anyone can advise our would-be writers and editors on how to get their careers off the ground, they can.”
